TenAsys Brings Real-time Development Tools to Microsoft Visual Studio 2005

The INtime 3.0 Real-time OS plug-in for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 covers all facets of the development cycle, including debug and fault detection, for simpler and more efficient creation of real-time applications on Microsoft Windows XP Embedded.

Beaverton, OR – Nov 7, 2005 - TenAsys Corporation, a Windows Embedded Partner Program Gold member and Microsoft Visual Studio Industry Partner (VSIP) program member, has integrated all of its key INtime 3.0 development tools into the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 integrated development environment (IDE). Direct access to help and wizards and the ability to edit, compile, debug and trap system fault events for INtime real-time applications simultaneously, alongside standard Windows applications, is managed by a single solution file inside the Visual Studio 2005 IDE.

“With the incorporation of the INtime real-time development tools within Visual Studio 2005, developers only need to master a single user interface to build embedded real-time Windows applications,” said Kim Hartman, VP of Sales & Marketing at TenAsys.

The ability to trap real-time process faults in the INtime virtual machine without disturbing operation of the Windows virtual-machine is of great value. If a real-time programming error generates a CPU exception the faulted real-time thread is suspended; the developer then has the option of starting the Visual Studio 2005 debugger at the precise point of the real-time exception while all non-related processes and threads on the system continue to run without interruption. Process faults can result from divide by zero errors, bad pointers, page faults, stack faults, and other CPU exceptions.

“This is a valuable productivity enhancement for those developers who need to build complex real-time applications for Windows XP Embedded,” said Jane Gilson, director, Mobile & Embedded Devices Division at Microsoft Corp. “Microsoft is excited that TenAsys has chosen to rely on the Visual Studio 2005 IDE as its customers’ development platform for Windows XP Embedded applications built on the INtime 3.0 real-time operating system.”

The INtime 3.0 debugger plug-in for Visual Studio 2005 gives developers the ability to monitor real-time variables and processes, define watch variables, set breakpoints, and perform source-level single-stepping on INtime real-time applications simultaneously with standard Windows applications, all from within the familiar Visual Studio 2005 development environment, eliminating the need to purchase or become skilled at a second set of development tools.

Microsoft Embedded ISV Partner of the Year

In 2004 and 2005, Microsoft Corporation presented TenAsys Corporation with the ‘Embedded Partner of the Year’ award, in the Independent Software Vendor category, in recognition of the commitment and value TenAsys’ INtime real-time operating system (RTOS) provides to the Microsoft Windows platform by addressing the most demanding mission critical and deterministic applications. TenAsys Corporation is the only ISV to have received this award two years in a row.

About TenAsys and INtime

INtime Real Time Extensions for Windows is a fully featured RTOS derived from iRMX. Applications written for the INtime RTOS execute with guaranteed determinism as fully-protected user-mode processes in concurrence with the Microsoft Windows XP Embedded operating system on standard PC hardware. Because real-time application code executes in user-mode the INtime environment is immune to application faults that crash kernel-mode driver solutions.

Using the INtime real-time extension for Windows XP Embedded, designers can reduce the cost of implementing computer-based control systems by utilizing x86-based PC hardware and Microsoft Windows software. INtime software combines the benefits of the Windows operating system — standard APIs, networking, user interface, and development environment — with a proven, highly reliable, real-time kernel designed for critical applications.

In 2005, TenAsys celebrates 25 years of continuous use of their real-time operating system products. Customers worldwide have entrusted TenAsys’ RTOS products to provide reliable deterministic control of their Intel x86 architecture embedded computers in a wide array of mission critical applications including: medical, telecomm, industrial control, robotics, test & measurement, and military.
